About this service

Highlights alone brighten hair; lowlights put depth back in. Used together across the full head, they create the contrast that makes hair look thicker and more dimensional rather than flat and uniformly light.

Your stylist weaves both lighter and deeper pieces throughout, deciding the ratio based on your natural depth and how much contrast you want. Hair that has been highlighted repeatedly often benefits from lowlights most, because the base has gradually disappeared.

What's included

  • Consultation about contrast, depth and the balance of light to dark
  • Highlights and lowlights woven throughout the full head
  • Development monitored for both processes
  • Toner or gloss to bring the tones together
  • Shampoo, conditioning treatment and blow-dry finish
  • Home care advice for maintaining dimension

What to expect at your appointment

Allow around three hours. Because two processes are being placed, this appointment takes longer than highlights alone.

Your stylist works through the head weaving light and deeper sections, then monitors development. Everything is rinsed, toned to bring the tones together, treated and blow-dried.

Who it's best for

Anyone whose highlighted hair has gone too light or too uniform, anyone wanting more visible dimension, and anyone with fine hair who wants the illusion of more thickness. It's also a good route if you want to move gradually darker without a solid tint.

Caring for it at home

Use sulphate-free colour-safe products and a weekly mask. Be sparing with toning shampoo — overusing it can dull lowlights — and use heat protectant before hot tools.

Expect to return every eight to ten weeks, sooner if your regrowth is high-contrast.

Tips from our stylists

  • Bring photos showing the contrast level you want, not just the lightness
  • If your highlights look flat, ask about lowlights rather than more lightener
  • Fine hair usually looks thicker with dimension than with uniform light colour
  • Go easy on purple shampoo so it doesn't dull the deeper pieces

Common questions

What do lowlights actually do?
They add deeper pieces back into hair that has become too light or uniform, which creates contrast and makes hair look thicker and more dimensional.
Can I have both in one appointment?
Yes — that's exactly what this service is, placed across the full head.
Will this make my hair darker overall?
It will look richer and deeper than highlights alone. Your stylist agrees the balance with you before starting.
How long does it take?
Around three hours.
