About this service
Cutting long hair is mostly about the ends and the weight. Length that's been growing for years usually carries older, drier ends and more bulk than the shape needs, and removing the right amount in the right places makes long hair look thicker and move better — without losing the length you've worked for.
Your stylist will talk through exactly how much is coming off before starting, then shape the ends and place any layers so the length still reads as long.
What's included
- Consultation about how much length you want to keep
- Shampoo and conditioning at the basin
- Cut through the ends with layers or shaping as needed
- Weight removed where length looks heavy or flat
- Blow-dry finish that shows the movement in the length
What to expect at your appointment
Allow about an hour. Long hair takes longer simply because there's more of it to section and check.
Your stylist will show you how much length they plan to take before cutting, work through the shape in sections, then dry and finish so you can see how the length falls and moves.
Who it's best for
Anyone with long hair who wants to keep the length while getting rid of thin, uneven or split ends — and anyone whose long hair feels heavy, flat at the top or lifeless through the mid-lengths.
Caring for it at home
Concentrate conditioner and treatments on the mid-lengths and ends, where the hair is oldest. Detangle from the ends upwards with a wide-tooth comb, sleep with long hair loosely tied or braided to reduce friction, and always use heat protectant before straighteners or a curling iron.
Long hair holds a cut well — every eight to twelve weeks is usually enough to keep the ends in good condition.
Tips from our stylists
- Say the number of inches you're happy to lose, and show it with your fingers — words like 'a little' mean different things to different people
- Trimming the ends regularly keeps length looking thicker, even though it feels counterintuitive
- If your length feels heavy, ask about internal layers rather than losing length
- Bring your hair in dry and down so your stylist can see where the weight actually sits
Common questions
- Will cutting my long hair make it grow faster?
- No — growth happens at the scalp. What trimming does is remove split ends before they travel further up the hair, so your length stays in better condition.
- Can I keep my length and still get layers?
- Yes. Layers can be placed to add movement without shortening your overall length.
- How long does it take?
- Around an hour, including consultation, shampoo, cut and blow-dry.
- How often should I book?
- Every eight to twelve weeks is enough for most long hair.
